Packer's notoriety began in 1874 when he, and a group of five other men, attempted to travel through the San Juan Mountains of Colorado during the peak of a harsh winter.
Only Packer ever reached civilisation, initially claiming that his companions had abandoned him. Ultimately, however, Packer confessed to having eaten the others as a way of staying alive during his two and a half month battle to escape the wilderness.
