In the San Joaquin Valley, he was known as the Visalia Ransacker before moving to the Sacramento area, where he became known as the East Area Rapist.
It wasn't until 2018, after several significant advances in forensic DNA testing, that police identified the Golden State Killer as Joseph James DeAngelo, a 72 year old former police officer. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on August 21st, 2020.
